The opening day at the 2010 ABN Amro World Tennis tournament produced exciting tennis as both the seeds in action prevailed in contrasting styles.
Third seed and 2009 French Open finalist Robin Soderling registered a come-from-behind victory over Italian Florent Serra to reach the second round of the 2010 ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, being played here in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
"I am satisfied with the win but I can play much, much better," Soderling said. "I started off really bad but then worked my way into the match and played okay in the end. The first match of the tournament is always the toughest for me. I haven’t played matches for a couple of weeks and was a little tight in the beginning."
Soderling fired 26 aces en route to a hard fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win to move ahead. He was later joined by Spaniard and fifth seed Tommy Robredo, who took out Dutch Robin Haase 7-6(4), 6-4 in almost 90 minutes of play.
In another exciting match from the opening day, German Florian Mayer completed a marathon 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-6(6) win over Serbian Janko Tipsarevic in a tussle that lasted two hours and 57 minutes in play.
In the other matches of the day, Dutch qualifier Igor Sijsling and Italian Andreas Seppi recorded contrasting wins over their respective opponents to move to the second round.
