Andy Roddick had a bad day at office as he suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Frenchman Gilles Simon at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington.
This was only the first win for Simon in three matches against Roddick. Roddick was sluggish throughout the game and even his much feared aces did not turn up to save the day for him. Roddick had a 55% first serve percentage and won 33 per cent of points behind his second serve .
He could muster only three aces. Simon put in a far better serving performance to clinch the match in just 70 minutes breaking the three time champion three times. Simon won 21-of-23 points on his first serve and 14-of-21 off the second serves.
"He was not able to hit winners against me because the court was slow," Simon said. "The difference was I managed to return his serves. Playing more points from the baseline, I felt a lot more confident."
The ouster also marked the earliest exit at Legg Mason for Andy Roddick in nine appearances. He has won the Washington title in 2001, ’05 and ’07. He reached the final last year too before succumbing to Juan Martin Del Potro in a third set tie-breaker.
"It was just a bad night, I don’t have much of a defense for it and I don’t think you can defend it," said Roddick. "I didn’t feel right physically or mentally, it was just a pretty bad effort."
Roddick later said that he is thinking of taking some tests to see if health issues could be responsible for his sluggish performance. He said that he had not felt at full energy levels for the past few weeks.
"I promise you I'm going to figure this out," Roddick said. "This is not what I built my reputation on." He said that health problems could lead to his withdrawing from the upcoming Toronto or Cincinnati events.
Simon will go up against Argentine David Nalbandian who is playing in his fifth tournament since undergoing hip surgery in May 2009.
Mardy Fish's career best winning streak of 11 matches was brought to an abrupt halt by Marin Cilic as the Croatian pulled off a spectacular 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory in two hours and 16 minutes.
In a see-saw battle in the third set, Cilic staved off all three break points faced on serve and converted two of his three opportunities to win the match. Cilic will face Janko Tipsarevic in the quarter final.Tipsarevic has lost all previous four encounters against Cilic.
With Fish out of the race, America's title hopes are over. Andy Roddick and John Isner too have crashed out of the tournament making it the first in the history of the tournament since it started in 1969 that no American had reached the quarter-finals.
