World No.2 Maria Sharapova looked a bit off color and her serve really disappointed in the match, allowing Klara Zakopalova to come back into the match after having several opportunities to go clear and cement her position in the match. Her slack attitude, let the Czech in and let the her win set 2, which she led 5-2.
In an unusual first set, where both players held serve only once up until the tenth game. The quality of tennis really needed some improvement, as both the players didn't really give a good account for their undeniable talents. The Russian won the set 6-4, she struck 13 winners and made 14 errors in a set that lasted 57 minutes.
Set 2 saw a close battle yet again between the two, Sharapova had a solid argument with the chair umpire regarding a winner that she believed she hit. Zakopalova raced into a 6-3 lead in the tie break and takes the match into a decisive third. The set had it all, lots of drama as both players serve poorly again, and break one another 5 times each. Zakopalova hit 18 winners to Sharapova's 15. Sharapova led 5-2 at one point to throw the set away.
Set 3 was a much better performance by the Russian, who dropped only two games and won the match by smashed 13 winners compared to only 9 for Zakopalova. She broke her serve 3 times while this time the Czeck could only do it once. She won the set 6-2 in the end.
