Former World Number One Maria Sharapova registered a impressive win over Czech veteran Iveta Benesova to enter the third round of the 2010 US Open, the season's last Grand Slam event being played here in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Sharapova made a strong start to the match and broke Benesova's serve in the second game to race to a quick 3-0, and 4-1 lead. With no further resistance from the Czech veteran, Sharapova wrapped up the first set by 6 games to 1.
The second set did not change the story much as Benesova lost her serve repeatedly to give away the match 1-6, 2-6 in little over an hour. Sharapova now meets American Beatrice Capra, who caused a big upset by eliminating Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.
Earlier in the day, Wimbledon finalist Vera Zvonareva struggled before securing a win over German Sabine Lisicki in two closely fought sets, winning 6-1, 7-6(5). She was later joined by top seed and last year's finalist Caroline Wozniacki, who double bagled Chinese Taipei's Kai-Chen Chang to enter the third round of the event.
Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who triumphed here six years ago for her first ever Grand Slam success, also made it to the next round with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win over an in-form Latvian Anastasija Sevastova. She now meets compatriot Maria Kirilenko, who overcame the Austrian challenge of Yvonne Meusberger with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 scoreline.
Other winners of the day included Alexandra Dulgheru, Patty Schnyder, Lourdes Dominguez Lino, Yung-Jan Chan, Dominika Cibulkova, Yanina Wickmayer, Kaia Kanepi, Andrea Petkovic and Jelena Jankovic, who outmuscled 1999 Wimbledon semifinalist Mirjana Lucic 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to move ahead in the draw. Two years ago, by the virtue of her final run in Flushing Meadows, Jankovic finished the year ranked No.1 in the world. She lost the final to Serena Williams, who is a three time winner here.
