A few days ago Serena Williams fired 23 aces to beat Zheng Jie in the third round at Wimbledon 2012, however on Thursday she raised the bar with record 24 aces to knock out Belarusian Victoria Azarenka in the semi-final.
“I had absolutely no idea,” she said of the record. “It really didn't feel like I hit 24 aces at all. I honestly felt like I hit maybe 10. Like I wasn't going for that much. I was just going to play well, to serve well, to do the best I could."
She added “I honestly didn't feel great on my serve today. I really didn't. I think yesterday I felt pretty good. I don't know. I thought my serve was off, and apparently, clearly, it wasn't, so maybe I should be offa little more.”
Azarenka agreed that Serena's heavy serving was a major factor in the match.
"The serve is the one difference that brings her to the higher level," Azarenka said. "I just tried to fight and tried to stay in the moment. If I got a chance, I just tried to grab it. It was really close, but it just wasn't my day today."
She continued "She serves 200. I don't see anybody else serving like this on the tour. And she places it well. But there's no point to sit here and cry how unfortunate it was for me because she played great - I just have to give her all the credit."
