Serena overpowers Peng, eases into Madrid Pre-Quarters
Two-time defending champion Serena Williams who is looking to complete a three-peat of titles here at the Madrid Open this year was at her clinical best against Shuai Peng of China in their second round encounter here inside the Magic Box on Wednesday as she overpowered her with her raw power from the back court to accomplish a relatively easy 6-2, 6-3 win over her in just 64 minutes.

World No.1 Serena Williams eased into the pre-quarters of the WTA Premier Mandatory Event – Madrid Open here in the Spanish capital on Wednesday as her ever reliable serve and her near perfect movement on court gave her a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 victory over the World No. 42 Shuai Peng in just over an hour during the course of the afternoon. The top seed served 11 aces, hammered 28 winners, made only 14 unforced errors and saved both the break points on her serve to overcome her competitor on the day.

In just under half an hour with the assistance of 4 scintillating aces, and by winning all but one point on her own serve, the Floridian was able to claim the opening set with a 6-2 score-line. Serena was particularly severe on Peng’s serve as she won 54% and 46% points on her first and second serve respectively. The domination of Serena was virtually complete in this set as she won 29 points in total as compared to the measly 14 that were won by Shuai in the set.

Match Cast: Serena vs. Peng!

The second set saw an improvement in the level of the play of the Chinese player, but her level of play still fell short of Serena’s level. The 17-time Grand Slam champion was able to sustain the momentum and as she had carried the momentum forward, she successfully got that decisive break in the 4th game. That was all she needed as a few minutes later she went on to serve out the match with a scorching forehand winner down the line in the 9th game.
