In yet another battle between Masha and Serena, it was Serena who came out on top. The American played some 'Serena tennis' again today as she outplayed the World No.2 yet once more this year. The Olympic Gold medallist needed just an hour and twenty minutes to wrap up the final match of the season. She fired 11 thunderbolt aces and 40 winners en route to her 6-4,6-3 win.
The match started well for the Russian as she held serve comfortably for the first two games. In the third however, the World No.2 played a lacklustre game which allowed Serena to capitalize and take the first break of the match. That remained the only break of serve in that set as both players held serve. Masha was troubled a lot more on it and faced 4 break points. The winner count for Williams in that set was at 19.

The second set started poorly for the World No.2 and the capacity crowd which was firmly behind the underdog as Serena broke in the very first game. The American started to build on it and played an offensive game on the Sharapova serve, the Russian responded with fire and held serve while pushing the American back on her own serve. For six games straight Sharapova was the better player, but just couldn't take her chance when it came. Serena then took the initiative to break the Russian again to take the set and with it the title.

I agree with three previous posters. I think Maria has come back a long way this year. Her movement, ie. qickness (as opposed to speed) and agility (footwork) are better than ever. Her reinvented serve since the shoulder surgery is coming along well, but not consistent enough yet. Begrudgingly, she is starting to diversify her game. A little more of that and another half gear (call it afterburners) when she really needs it and she will consistently blow azer... off the court and beat s. williams too. I firmly believe she has is in her. Have a good break everyone!!

Yeah she really did. It just shows however that the level you need to beat Serena is practically impossible. It's getting that standard, maintaining it and not crumbling (Vika at The US Open for eg).

Maria played much better than I think anyone expected though.
