Serena Williams uses special ranking to get into US Open
Serena Williams has been putting her special injury-protected number one ranking into good use as she will be using it to get into the U.S. Open field.

Serena Williams is ranked at 172 this week and the cut off list for this year’s US Open has been the only till players have been granted direct entry into the field for the year's last major championship, which starts August 29 in New York.

But because Williams was out of tour for almost six months by a series of health issues, she has the right to exercise her special ranking to enter up to eight tournaments which includes one Grand Slam.

Serena said, "I have nothing to lose. I think that's when people are the most dangerous."

Williams also added, "It was really awful to miss the Open last year. My goal is to make sure I'm really fit. It's the longest I've taken ever taken off from tennis, so it's a challenge.""I have nothing to lose," Williams said Wednesday at a news conference in New York City before a World Team Tennis event. "I think that's when people are the most dangerous."

The U.S. Tennis Association revealed on Wednesday that the provisional field for the U.S. Open has 97 of the top 100 women in the WTA rankings, including former world number one Kim Clijsters, Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and French Open titlist Li Na.

Serena affirmed opinions about health, "It was really awful to miss the Open last year. My goal is to make sure I'm really fit. It's the longest I've taken ever taken off from tennis, so it's a challenge."
