Defending champion and home favourite Serena Williams eliminated Mariajose Martinezsanchez of Spain with a straight sets victory, 6-3 7-5, to enter the fourth round of the US Open 2009.
The American hit 30 winners and committed just 17 unforced errors in her 1 hr 27 minute match against the ferocious Martinez Sanchez. She committed 4 double faults but lacked heavily in converting break points. She could manage to convert only 4 of the 11 opportunities she got.
"I heard a guy in the crowd saying, `Stop hitting lobs,’ so I didn’t hit any more lobs after that," Williams said. "My lob was not working today."
About her personal history with Martinez Sanchez from the 2009 French Open, Serena added - "I only can speak for me. I try to be very professional, extremely professional in my job. That’s what I’m here to do. And win, I hope."
Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia awaits the burly defending champion in Rd 4..!!
In the men's singles third round match, Andy Murray won against Chilean Paul Capdeville with a break of serve in the eighth game of the fourth set to enter the fourth round of the US Open 2009. Murray won 6-2 3-6 6-0 6-2.
The Scot hit 44 winners and converted 7 of 17 break points he earned. 29 unforced errors and 2 double faults in the entire match weren't much too. The world no. 2 was aided by some terrific serving too, as he swished past Capdeville 15 times untouched..!!
Barring the second set that Murray lost 3-6, there was nothing much in the match for Capdeville, who had the best Grand Slam performance of his career.
Murray won the first set pretty convincingly even though there were lots of long rallies involved and deuces came by every now and then. The second set saw the Chilean break Murray and hold all of his serves to rejoice for a while.
The second set loss seemed to have hurt Murray as he murdered Capdeville 6-0 in the third set, producing NIL unforced errors and double faults. That was one PERFECT SET in Tennis. Everything looked planned after the second set as Murray tested Capdeville's stamina with really long rallies and forced him out of his breath.
The fourth set too, was a cakewalk for the Scot as he broke Capdeville early on and then broke again at 5-2 to hear GAME, SET, MATCH from the umpire! The 2008 runner up now moves into the fourth round where he will play the winner of Ivan Navarro and Taylor Dent.
