Rainer Schuettler defeated Ecuador’s Giovanni Lapentti with a 4-6 6-1 6-4, in the final round of qualifying in Indian Wells on Wednesday. With this win, Schuettler qualified to play in the tournament for 10th straight year. At an age of 33 years, Schuettler will be the oldest male in the 96-player field. He won crucial break points to finish the match within two hours.
On the other hand, only two Americans could manage to qualify for the main draw. American Tim Smyczek defeated Serbian wild card entrant Filip Krajinovic 6-1 6-0, and Bobby Reynolds defeated his countryman Lester Cook 6-4 7-5.
In another match, Australian Marinko Matosevic defeated American Donald Young with a 6-4 4-6 7-6(8) scoreline. And, Argentine Brian Dabul thrashed Kevin Kim 6-1, 6-4.
