Francesca Schiavone waited a long time before laying hands on the winner's trophy for only the second time in her career with a straight sets win at the 2009 Kremlin Cup final.
It wasn't a perfect finish to a wonderful week but Italian star Francesca Schiavone defeated an ailing Olga Govortsova in straight sets to win the 2009 KREMLIN CUP, her second title in as many as 12 attempts.
Schiavone started the match on a high note and after some resistance from the Belarusian and a couple of exchanges of service breaks, pocketed the opening set 6-3. As the injury took it's toll on Govortsova, the Italian solidified her grip on the match and won it in 77 minutes of play with a 6-3, 6-0 scoreline.
Schiavone had been in 11 Sony Ericsson WTA Singles finals previously and was gunning for only her second title in as many attempts. Her most recent final finish was in Osaka, when she lost to first time Singles winner Samantha Stosur.
Schiavone thanked her father who was interestingly present in the only other final victory of her daughter in Bad Gastein, which the Italian won in 2006.
With a win today, Schiavone received a winner's check of US$ 157,427 and a beautiful diamond studded LONGINES watch whereas Govortsova had to settle for US$ 83,908 for her effort.
