Former French Open finalist Sara Errani has lost the momentum that she had created for herself in the first half of the season – as right from the beginning of February until the conclusion of the Clay Major in Paris; she was very much a regular fixture at the business end of the tournaments.
After-all she had got through to the final of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in the Emirates, won the trophy in Acapulco, and marched on to the semi-finals of three successive big ticket events in Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros. However, thereafter she somehow lost the plot as she exited from Wimbledon in round 1 and the US Open in round 2. And, last week she suffered yet another blow as she was sent packing out of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in her opener by the double Grand Slam champ Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Nonetheless, everybody knows that the Russian is in a different league altogether, something that can’t be said about her adversary here in Beijing as Misaki Doi isn’t that capable as she does not have the same kind of firepower in her armoury that could possibly hurt Sara from the back of the court.
Doi is currently ranked 84th in the world and due to her lower ranking she used to be a regular on the Challenger circuit. But, she did manage to make an entry in the main draw at Tashkent, Seoul, Tokyo and now in the Chinese capital as well. Although, she did not cause any big upsets she at least got the feel of playing at the big stage and won two matches as well.
This would be the first occasion when the duo will confront each other on the ladies’ circuit and despite a poor run of form Errani would still enter the match as a clear cut favourite.
