World No.1 Maria Sharapova has been in fantastic form all year long. She reached the finals of the Aussie Open to start her year, and reached the finals of several events before winning her first title of the year at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Her consistency this year was second to no one, and she also won her first Roland Garros crown, on what is her least favorite surface.
Her defeat to Sabine Lisicki was a huge shock for her and her fans, as she really came into this tournament as the favorite and the player to beat. One must not take anything away from Lisicki though as she played some unbelievable attacking tennis to down Russia's flag bearer at the Olympics. The German won the match in an hour and 24 minutes, with a scoreline of 6-4,6-3.
