Roger Federer vs. Vasek Pospisil: Cincinnati Masters Round 2 Preview
17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer will begin his quest for an 80th career title when he will lock horns with the dangerous Canadian Vasek Pospisil in his opener at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati on Wednesday. Can the Swiss make a blistering start to his campaign here in Mason?

Former World No.1 Roger Federer would be the first man to acknowledge that he failed to get his act together against the current World No.10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the title clash of the Toronto Masters on Sunday. The Great Man described his performance with the remark ‘shitty day’ during his post-match press conference. Clearly it was the best way to refer to such an act as he made as many as 37 unforced errors and missed routine forehands which he would have made even in his wildest of dreams.

The now 33-year-old hasn’t been able to perform with the best of his ability during the crunch situations of the big matches – a 2/5 win-loss record in tournament finals is the testament to this fact. Barring his wins over Tomas Berdych in Dubai and Alejandro Falla in Halle, Federer has lost a lot of matches which he could have won. In fact, he had chances in most of those matches – he lost tight matches to Novak Djokovic in Indian Wells and the All England Club, was beaten by Stan Wawrinka in Monte Carlo once again in the deciding set and Lleyton Hewitt too took him to three sets in Queensland.

In the meantime, Vasek Pospisil came back from the brink of defeat in his first round win over the former top-tenner Radek Stepanek as he was down three match points at one point of time in the contest on Monday. Nonetheless, he managed to serve his way out of trouble to eventually prevail with a 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(4) victory over the Czech to earn a shot at Roger in round 2.

Head-to-Head: Federer has a 2-0 lead over Pospisil including a tight three set victory in the semi-finals of the Swiss Indoors in Basel in 2013 and even though Pospisil is enjoying his best form of the season, Federer will still arrive on court as the big favorite. Besides, Federer has a great record in Cincinnati where he has won a record five times, which could prove to be the recipe for more success this year here in Ohio.
