Roger Federer scrapes past Marin Cilic to move into Toronto Quarters
On a day of upsets that saw both the Australian Open and Wimbledon champions Stan Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic bowing out of the Rogers Cup, it was the former World No.1 Roger Federer who eventually restored order inside Stadium Court here at the Rexall Centre in Toronto on Thursday. The Great Man gave himself a perfect gift ahead of his 33rd birthday tomorrow as he achieved a hard fought three set victory over the former World No. 9 Marin Cilic during the course of the night in Ontario.

17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer hadn’t thought about a long day in the office and particularly not after he had six match points in set No.2 for a straight sets triumph in his second round clash against the former Aussie Open semifinalist Marin Cilic here in Canada on Thursday evening.

But, he was left disappointed at that stage of the contest as he couldn’t capitalize on those opportunities because Cilic came up with an inspired performance to take it to a third set. There both man remained steady on their serves until Cilic chocked in the ninth game when he lost his focus and with it his serve as well to give Federer an opportunity to serve out the match which he did handsomely in the next game to pick up a terrific 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-4 win in two hours and 39 minutes.

The master took the first set 7 games to six in 51 minutes in a keenly contested tiebreaker. He produced great depth on the final point of the set to extract an error from the racquet of the former top-tenner to accomplish a one set to love lead in the match. Before that both players manufactured some high octane stuff with Federer in particular looking sublime in the forecourt with his exquisite volleys and sizzling forehands. In the end, it was Federer’s high success rate behind his first serve (won 88% points), and at the net (collected 8 of 10 points) which allowed him to dominate the proceedings on his own service games.

Match Cast: Federer vs. Cilic!

In what was a remarkable set of tennis which saw Federer missing out on six match points in the 10th game, it was Cilic who finally grabbed the second set in 64 minutes. The second seed had a sitter of a volley to close out the match on his fifth match point but cooked it into the net and subsequently, two big serves from Cilic helped him in holding his serve in that game. Afterwards, the set moved into a tiebreak where Cilic raced to a 3-0 lead before closing the set out by drawing an error from the racquet of Federer on his first set point.

The third set too was heading towards a tiebreaker as neither of the two players was making any impact on their respective serves. As the pair was holding their serves in a routine manner, a tiebreak looked likely until game No.9 when Federer got that decisive break of serve before closing out the match in the following game with a massive serve out wide.
