Top-seeded American Andy Roddick defeated Yen-hsun Lu of Taiwan on Thursday to reach quaterfinals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships

Andy RoddickRoddick hit 10 aces and got the key break of serve to defeat Lu who is one of the lowest ranked players in the tournament. Roddick had seven opportunities to break Lu, but he could not capitalize on those but finally converted on the eighth by double-fault. Because of that, Roddick got a 5-4 lead in the second set.

After the match, Roddick said, "It was good. But if I want to go further in this tournament I've got to do better on break points," On his below-par performance, Roddick quoted "That was really ordinary. The one I ended up getting was because he doubled." He further added that "I'm doing a good job of getting break points. I feel like I'm in every opponent's service game, but I can't miss second-serve returns at 15-30 or 30-all. I'm very close to playing really well. It's just a matter of tightening things up to make that happen."

In another match, fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic was pushed to the wall by American Michael Russell. Berdych fought hard to make a come back after losing the first set and emerged victorious with a 3-6 6-3 6-2. Berdych will play Latvian Ernests Gulbis in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, French Jeremy Chardy retired during his match with Slovakian Lukas Lacko, where Lacko was leading with a 7-6(4) 2-1. Lacko will play Philipp Petzschner in the quarterfinal.

In the Cellular South Cup, top-seeded Maria Sharapova dominated Elena Baltacha of Great Britain in their quarterfinal match and easily reached the semifinals with a 6-2 7-5. In a big upset of the tournment, second-seeded Melanie Oudin was outsd by Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden with a 6-1 6-3.
