Roddick opened the match on a confident note and raced to a formidable 5-0 lead in the first set. The Frenchman did show some signs of competitive edge when he got one of the breaks back, however, Roddick put an end to the brief comeback by closing the set 6-3.
The second set did not change the story much as Roddick continued to break Robert's serves and raced to a formidable two sets to love lead. The third set brought more success for the American star when he pounced at the early opportunities and pocketed a double break to then complete the victory with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 scoreline.
Earlier in the day, Russian Nikolay Davydenko defied a spirited performance from the American Michael Russell to win 6-4, 6-1, 6-3. He was later joined by the fifth seeded Swede Robin Soderling, who overcame a massive struggle and the Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer with a 7-5, 6-3, 6-7(2), 5-7, 6-4 scoreline.
Other winners of the day include 2003 finalist and Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, Marin Cilic, Richard Gasquet, Igor Andreev, Gael Monfils, Thiemo De Bakker, Ivan Dodig, Kei Nishikori and Ricardo Mello, who all registered contrasting victories over their respective opponents to move ahead in the draw.
