Roberta Vinci goes into the US Open with loads of confidence as she lifted her first title of 2012 at the Texas Tennis Open, defeating Jelena Jankovic in two tight sets 7-5, 6-3, in just over two hours. “It was a tough week. We played a really good final. She's a great player.”
Admitting that nerves got better of her in the early part of the match, Vinci commented, “I had a lot of chances [early]. It was 3-1 but in my mind I'm thinking, 'don't worry, you can do it. It's not [an easy] 3-1.”
Serving for the opening set at 5-4, 30-15, a close call went against the Serb and that proved to be the deciding point as Jankovic lost the set from there. “It was a close call,” Jankovic said of the point at 5-4. “If that ball went my way, it would have been two set points. But after that everything seemed to go down hill, and I started making a lot of errors.”
Jankovic also expressed her appreciation to the way Vinci played. “Again, she came up with some defensive slices in the corner,” said Jankovic. “She played unbelievable. She came up with some really good shots.”
