Roberta Vinci reached the fourth round at the US Open after beating Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets. The Italian wrapped the match in 1 hour and 28 minutes with a 6-2, 7-5 scoreline. Vinci fought back after trailing 3-5 in the second set to win the next 4 games to win the match.
Both players started the match on a very nervous note with the first four service games going against the server. But in 35 minutes, Vinci took the opening set after winning the next four games by keeping a tab on the unforced errors. With 12 unforced errors coming from both the players, it was Vinci who kept her calm and regrouped herself by hitting 11 winners.
The second set was a much closer affair with Cibulkova taking the initiative and breaking the Vinci serve in the seventh game and followed it with a hold to lead 5-3. But nerves got the better of the Slovak, who failed to serve out the match at 5-4 and got herself broken again at 5-6 to give the match to Vinci.
Vinci next takes on Pole Agniezska Radwanska for a place in the quarter-finals.
