After washing out the two days of play in Montreal, rain spoiled the first day’s play at the Pilot Pen tennis tournament, being played here in New Haven. The matches have been rescheduled to be played on Monday. 

At the same time, many qualifying matches held indoors at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on the campus of Yale University after overnight rain. Heavy pouring forced the suspension of some first-round men's and women's matches.

Russian Elena Vesnina quoted, “It's really difficult to concentrate on your game and concentrate on the schedule of your match when it rains." She further added "I had this experience last year, so I was just stronger and had to concentrate."

On Monday many notable players will start their matches including Russian Elena Dementieva, American Melanie Oudin and James Blake. Mardy Fish, who reached the final of the Cincinnati Masters pulled out of the tournament due to fatigue.
