Nicolas Massu of Chile toiled hard for 3 hours and 25 minutes before finally beating qualifier Ryan Sweeting of the United States 6-7(5) 7-6 (3) 6-4. This was the longest match of 2010 season so far.
"I thought I was the more aggressive player throughout the whole match," rued Sweeting later. "I had chances in every set. I don't think the first set needed to go 7-6. I was up a break there and I was up a break in the second and third."
Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela also advanced to his first quarter-final of the season after defeating seventh-seeded countryman Eduardo Schwank 6-1 6-7(5) 6-1.
Schwank was later fined $1000 for his erratic and unusual play.
"The problem with my back, it affected me mentally so it didn't help the match," Schwank said."I was doing drop shots to shorten the point so to not exert my back so much and also to make him run and get him tired."
Rain forced the postponement of defending champion Lleyton Hewitt's match against lucky loser Somdev Devvarman of India until Thursday. The match between third-seeded Sam Querrey of the United States and Blaz Kavcic of Slovania was also rescheduled for Thursday.
