Agnieska Radwanska of Poland is seeded number three at the $700,000 WTA Bank of the West Classic tournament being held at Stanford. The 2 time quarter finalist at Wimbledon, Radwanska looked in good form as she played confident ground strokes and strategized brisk rallies from the back of the court. She had to face South African Channelle Scheepers in the first round and managed to defeat her in three tightly fought sets with a scoreline of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
Radwanska took perfect assistance from her serve when she needed it the most. Both her aces came in the third set. On realizing the urgency of the situation Radwanska put in her best effort to break Scheepers as soon as she got a look at break points.
Radwanska has been improving on her matchplay considerably as she has recorded four wins off her last five matches from having lost 6 matches of the previous 10 played. Scheepers even after being the lower ranked among the two, showed amazing fighting qualities as she successfully leveled the match after losing the first set to Radwanska.Scheepers, ranked 91st, did well at the French Open earlier this year, reaching the fourth round as a qualifier.
As far as other results are concerned, the much famed Ana Ivanovic seemed to be in better form as she defeated Alisa Kleybanova in straight sets with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-2. Ivanovic was quoted saying, I'm really happy to see the things I've been working on in the past month show on the court," Ivanovic said. "I was getting to every ball and managed to keep the rallies going so I didn't have to pull the trigger too early. Alisa is a tough opponent and this is probably her best surface, so I'm very happy to win".
Olga Govortsova defeated Alla Kudryavtsena 6-1, 6-1 and Dominika Cibulkova downed American Hilary Barte 6-2, 6-2. Dinara Safina suffered yet another defeat as she lost to Japanese veteran Kimiko Date Krumm in three sets, 4-6, 7-6(7-0), 6-2
