Rising American star Sam Querrey finally overcame compatriot and top seed Andy Roddick 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 to reach the finals of the 2010 Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, being played here in Memphis, USA.
"You're not going to get that too many times from Andy, but I'll take it," said Querrey. "When that rare opportunity comes, you've just got to take advantage of it. I thought I did a good job there, and just kept the momentum going and played an unbelievable third set."
In another exciting match, tall American John Isner defied a spirited performance by 6'10'' Croat to register the 6-1, 7-6(7) win. In another quarterfinal match, German Philipp Petzschner survived mid-match jitters to beat Slovak Lukas Lacko 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 and reached the last four.
Latvian Ernests Gulbis became the surprise entry into the last four when he defeated Czech
Tomas Berdych 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).
"It's a problem (patella tendonitis) which I've been dealing with for more than one-and-a-half years," said Gulbis. "The physio come out on to court and he knew exactly what to do with my knee, so he helped me a lot. At 4-1, I was pretty sure I was going to lose so I went for my shots; I played more relaxed. I broke him once, and now he's under pressure, not me anymore."
In the women's draw, top seed Maria Sharapova reached the final with a convincing 6-4, 6-3 win over Czech Petra Kvitova. She next faces Swedish qualifier Sofia Arvidsson, who took out British No.1 Anne Keothavong 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a two hour and 19 minute battle.
