Top-seeded Flavia Pennetta stayed on course to qualify for the season ending WTA Championships by defeating Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany 6-3 4-6 6-2 and advanced into the quarterfinals of Generali Ladies on Thursday.
She moves onto play unseeded Ioana Raluca Olaru of Romania, who battled past German qualifier Julia Goerges 3-6 6-2 7-5.
Second seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Ukraine ousted Alize Cornet of France 6-4 7-5 in the second round, but her younger sister Urszula Radwanska lost to seventh-seeded Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 6-4 6-4.
"Alize and I grew up playing against each other so I know her game well. I didn't expect an easy match - I'm just happy I could win in straight sets." said elder Radwanska.
In other matches of the day, third seeded Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium rallied past Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania 2-6 6-3 6-1, while another Romanian Ioana Raluca Olaru pressed hard to defeat German qualifier Julia Goerges 3-6 6-2 7-5.
