Austrian Tamira Paszek returned to the winner's circle in Québec City as she clinched the Bell Challenge title after defeating Bethanie Mattek-Sands with a 7-6 (6) 2-6 7-5 scoreline. Paszek played fantastically throughout the match and did not panic after losing the second set to claim her second WTA Tour title. Earlier, Paszek grabbed the headlines, when she won her first tour title at Portoroz in 2006 at age 15.
Paszek, a former world no.35 had to play in the qualifying round before she could make it to the main draw. The Austrian saved two set points in the first set and rallied to win the match on a convincing note in the end.
After the match, Paszek said, "It's overwhelming. I'm extremely happy. Anytime you win a tournament for the first time it's very special. This is something I'll remember the rest of my life." She further added, "I want to thank my family and friends for supporting me during tough times last year. I always believed I could come back."
Mattek-Sands also looked satisfied after the match, as she quoted, "This is my best tournament. When I made the final here again I really wanted to get my picture up on the champion's wall. Tamira is a tough player. She was injured for a little bit but obviously playing qualifying here and making it all the way to the final, she has been playing really well."
