Bammer struggled past Slovakian Katarina Srebotnik 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 in two hours and 11 minutes of struggle. She was later joined by Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, who won the battle of big names when she stumbled Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 to reach the second round.
Other notable winners of the day included Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, Sara Errani, Alexandra Dulgheru, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Julia Goerges, Anastasija Sevastova, Petra Kvitova and Julie Coin, who recorded impressive wins to stay on course in the premier event.
And finally the qualifiers, Karolina Sprem, Petra Martic, Tsvetana Pironkova, Yung-Jan Chan and Sloane Stephens, who registered contrasting wins to continue their solid run in the tournament.
