World No. 7 and second-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina will start off his 2013 Open 13 campaign on Thursday against home-favorite and World No. 51 Michael Llodra of France. Coming off title victory at Rotterdam Open, the lanky Argentine is favorite to clinch the title in Marseille this time.
2009 US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro is always considered a legitimate threat to the top trio of Djokovic, Federer and Murray. It was this Argentine who snapped Federer’s tremendous winning streak at the US Open to clinch his maiden Grand Slam. Del Potro could not continue in that manner after that surprise Major triumph as his progress was halted by recurring injuries, which forced him to miss-out almost an entire tennis season. Took every challenge head on like a true champion, Del Potro worked hard to recuperate from the injuries and once again he is back in the Top 10. Del Potro did not drop many games to race to the third round at 2013 Aussie Open, where he was stunned by Jeremy Chardy in five sets. He made up for that disappointment by winning the Rotterdam title last week and became the first Argentinean to do so after Vilas, who achieved this feat in 1982.
Del Potro’s opponent is hugely popular Frenchman Michael Llodra, who is known for his textbook serve-volley play and consistent exploits in doubles. Llodra has achieved significant success in doubles, but has not been able to replicate that performance in singles. The Frenchman is bidding for his sixth carrier singles title and has a 4-2 win-loss record for the season so far.
In head to head, the lanky Argentine apparently leads with 4-1 against Llodra. Last time they met in the 2012 Paris Masters, where Llodra topped Del Potro in straight sets. Well, the in-form Argentine must be looking forward to avenge that loss.
