Five-time Grand Slam Champion and World No.1 Novak Djokovic is ready to battle unknown quantity Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the second round of the Madrid Masters, here in the Spanish capital.
Nole has had a tremendous year so far and has already won the Aussie Open and the Miami Masters. After an unbelievable season last year, the Serb has not stopped and is still firing on all cylinders. Djokovic comes into the tournament as the defending champion and top seed. The Madrid Masters are again being built up as a battle between Rafael Nadal and Djokovic after the Spaniard outplayed the Serb in the finals of the Monte Carlo Masters. The Serb has since also skipped his home ATP event - the Serbia Open, sighting the passing away of his grandfather as his reason for it. Djokovic had claimed he had 'no energy' after being beaten by Nadal. One has to wonder what kind of mind-frame, the champion is in before playing his first match of the event. His win/loss record at this year stands at 24/3 and is the overwhelming favorite to win this match.
Gimeno-Traver comes into the match knowing that a win for him would not just shock the world but put his name on the map of the tennis world. That however, is hardly a possibility and he should consider this match as an learning experience more than anything else. Nevertheless, as history suggests the Spaniard does have a victory to his name against the Serb and would love to draw some inspiration from that.
In the two matches that the two have played, Djokovic and Gimeno-Traver are tied at one each. But the Spaniard's victory came way back in 2006 and both their statures have changed considerably since then.
TennisEarth picks Djokovic to win in two uncontested sets.
