World No. 1 Novak Djokovic put up a display of exquisite shot-making as he outwit World No. 22 Philipp Kohlschreiber to book a spot in the quarterfinals of the US Open. The Serbian never looked in trouble as he was the one who was quick off the blocks to bag the opening set in just 25 minutes. In the second set, the German tried hard but failed to match the in-form Djokovic in the gruelling baseline exchanges. The 2011 champion continued the trend in the third set as well as he completed an easy win on the day in just under two hours.
After 25 minutes of some enthralling and dazzling stroke-play from the Serbinator, the opening set got over with a 6-1 scoreline in his favor. Novak was near perfect in all the departments of his game as he smacked 7 winners, made only three unforced errors, secured an impressive 71% points behind his first serve and converted both the break-points that were offered to him by his opponent to take a crucial one set to love lead in the contest.
In contrast to the first set that got over in less than half an hour, the second set turned out to be a lengthy affair between the two players as it lasted exactly 56 minutes on the match clock. And, it must be said that Kohlschreiber had his chances as he had a set point in the 10th game and then had a break point to break back in the 12th game as well. However, Djokovic was just a bit too solid during all those clutch moments as he came up with some unbelievable serves and hit a few spectacular ground-strokes to achieve a two sets to love advantage over his rival in the match.
The pattern of the match didn’t change in the third set as well. The Monte Carlo resident continued to control the court like a lion in the jungle as he came up with his signature backhand down the line winners at will. In the 42 minutes needed to decide the outcome of the set, Djokovic slammed 15 winners, 3 aces and converted one out of two break point opportunities to finish off the match in three sets.
"I'm very glad obviously that I had so many consecutive quarterfinals of Grand Slams. It says that I do value these tournaments the most and try to always perform my best tennis in them," Djokovic said.
"It doesn't feel that it went very easily," Djokovic said after the match. "Philipp is a tough player."
"I think it's great that I have been playing some really good tennis, really high quality so far, but it's normal to expect that I'm going to have tougher opponents as the tournament goes on," said Djokovic. "You know, quarter-finals against Murray, it's a very tough draw. It's the way it is."
