Novak Djokovic hails top four for mental strength
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic accepted that there is a gap between top four players and others. And, he also asserted that one obvious factor that separates the top four from others is mental strength.

Coming off title victory at Monte-Carlo, where he snapped Nadal’s 46 match winning-streak, Novak Djokovic will start off his Madrid Masters campaign on Tuesday. Over a past couple of seasons, World No. 1 Djokovic is the only contender on tour, who has challenged the prowess of Nadal on clay. In fact, the Serbian has made Nadal look vulnerable on many occasions – especially on clay.

While interacting with journalists on Monday, the Serbian asserted that mental strength plays an important role in molding a player’s career. And, he and other top three players are too good when it comes to mental strength, which separates them from others.

He quoted, “There is definitely a gap. The four players are the ones who are winning all the Grand Slams and major tournaments. Men's tennis is in a very high level; competition is getting stronger. But we cannot count out all the other players outside of the Four. Players like Ferrer, Berdych and Tsonga. These kind of players have shown in the past that they're able to win against the Four.”

He further added that “That's why men's tennis is now very interesting. I guess the experience that we have playing on a top level and winning that many major titles helps us get that necessary confidence and also I guess emotional stability in some crucial moments during the match.”

When asked about his ankle-injury, when he sustained during David Cup, the Serbian said, “its better every day. I've been doing a lot of work from the end of Monte-Carlo tournament till now in order to obviously get ready for Madrid. It's a very big tournament that I like to play. Hopefully on Tuesday or Wednesday, whenever I play, it's going to be perfectly fine.”

Djokovic will take on tricky opponent Grigor Dimitrov in his opening encounter. He praised Dimitrov, “He has the capacity to play in a very, very high level because he's very talented. He's an all round player and he showed it. With his style of the game, you think that he can play his best on the hard courts and the faster courts, but he showed in Monte-Carlo when he pushed Nadal to three sets, he can play equally well on clay.”
