Novak Djokovic: I am not trying to find any excuses for the loss
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia praised Grigor Dimitrov for handling him a three-set loss on Tuesday. The Serbian asserted that it was a lack of practice, which contributed in his loss against the rising Bulgarian Dimitrov and also gave credit to his opponent, who made the most of that.

On Tuesday night, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic fell to rising Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, who is currently ranked as World No. 28 in the ATP Rankings. Despite saving a match-point in the second-set, the top-seeded Serbian suffered a three-set loss. Like a true champion, Djokovic accepted that it was a lack of hitting practice after Monte-Carlo Masters which proved crucial in his defeat. He lost to 21 year old Grigor Dimitrov 7-6(6), 6-7(8), 6-3 on Tuesday night at the 2013 Madrid Open.

After the match, Djokovic said, “for 12 days after Monte Carlo, I haven’t touched the racquet; I didn’t prepare myself so well. But I’m not trying to find any excuses for the loss. I tried to do my best. All the credit also to Dimitrov because he was the better player on the court. He was striking the ball really well, serving great, changing the pace and he deserved to win.”

Djokovic came to Madrid Masters after snapping Rafael Nadal’s 46 match-winning streak at Monte-Carlo. He had also recuperated from a right ankle injury, which he sustained during Davis Cup.

Djokovic also talked about his ankle injury and now his preparations for the following Rome Masters, “I thought it was the right decision because, luckily for me, nothing really happened when I twisted the ankle during the match,” the Serbian quoted. “It was a slight moment. I had good protection on my ankle. So right now that is the only positive thing that I look into, is that I didn’t injure my ankle worse before Rome and Paris.”
