Nikolay Davydenko wins 2009 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals

Nikolay Davydenko finally acheived the biggest prize of his professional career by winning the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at the magnificient O2 Arena in London.
Nikolay Davydenko became the first Russian in the 39-year history of the season ending championships by winning the 2009 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

Davydenko beat World No.5 Juan Martin Del Potro in straight sets to win the coveted year-end crown. With a win, Davydenko capped a perfect week which saw him register wins over a Wimbledon champion and French Open champion (Roger Federer), Australian Open champion (Rafael Nadal) and the U.S. Open champion (Juan Martin Del Potro) to achieve the most satisfying moment of his professional career.
In the finals today, Davydenko made a dream start to the match and picked up a quick break in the third game to then maintain the lead and win the opening set 6-3. The second set did not change the story much as the Russian kept looking for the opportunities of sabotage which finally came in the ninth game of the set as Davydenko broke Del Potro for the second time in the match to register the 6-3, 6-4 win in one hour and 24 minutes of play.
"It's amazing coming here as world number seven and still winning the tournament, I've surprised myself,"
admitted Davydenko, whose prize money this week tops £1.5 million," said Davydenko.
"It's been such a special week. I know I've got a lot of Russian fans but maybe I've some English fans now," added the Russian.
"I also want to congratulate Juan Martin, this has been an amazing season for him."
Del Potro, who was gracious in his defeat, had all the kind words for the victor - "Nikolay has a great week and beaten some great champions, so he totally deserves this."
With a win, Davydenko received the winner's check of a whopping $1.51 million and a beautiful trophy with his name engraved on it.
In the doubles final, the American twin-brothers duo of Mike and Bob Bryan clinched the third year-end title of their elusive careers by beating the Israeli-Russian pair of Andy Ram and Max Mirnyi 7-6(5), 6-3.
"We felt like it was stolen from us last year," Bob Bryan said. "Now we kind of crept up on those guys and stole it from them this year. We feel like it's a little bit of a payback."
