After suffering on the sidelines for more than seven months over the course of 2012-13, King of Clay Rafael Nadal came back with a bang reaching the finals of nine tournaments out of which he won an astonishing seven.
Entering Wimbledon as one of the favourites, the former champion lost in the very first round to a player ranked 130 places below him, giving impetus to fresh speculation surrounding his troublesome left knee.
So, it came as a massive relief for Rafa fans when the Spaniard returned to training this week back in Mallorca. Uncle Toni took a step further and has now confirmer the twelve-time Grand Slam winner’s desire to play on the hard courts of North America.
“Rafa will come back,” insisted Toni Nadal. “He has no fear of the hard court surface – he has nothing more to lose. Currently Rafa is doing physical training, but no racquet workouts. The break is important – he has played enough.”
The news means that barring an injury, all of the top 40 of the men’s roster will be present at the Rogers Cup in Montreal this year.
The event that kicks off on August 5 will culminate on the 11th of the month and is going to be play at Montreal’s Uniprix Stadium. Tourament director was glad, that he will have a full roster this year after most opted for a break following a gruelling grass court season that included the London Olympics
“Our tournament has a history of attracting the best of the best and this year is no different with every single player in the Top 40 committed to play our event.
“Our fans are in store for a remarkable week of exciting tennis combined with an electric atmosphere and several special ceremonies and presentations.”
