Nadal opened the match on a scintillating note and broke Soderling's serve in the very first game after which he duly consolidated the single break and wrapped up the first set 6-4.
The second set turned out to be a lopsided affair when Nadal reeled off six games in a row after losing the first one to get to a formidable two sets to love lead.
The third set saw the best out of both players as in the absence of break till, both players tested each other to limits. As a result, the set went into a tie-break where Nadal reigned supreme and completed the 6-1, 6-4, 7-6(3) win in two hours and 35 minutes of play.
Nadal is seeking his sixth French Open crown after wins in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010.
He now meets the winner of the match between Andy Murray and Juan Ignacio Chela which is already underway at the Suzanne Lenglen Court.
