Top seeded Andy Murray looked impressive in 6-3 6-1 victory over wild card Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain at Valencia Open.
Murray, playing in his first match since representing Great Britain in Davis Cup in September, won 22 of 26 first-serve points and broke Gimeno-Traver five times.
Murray next faces Leonardo Mayer of Argentina, who ousted 2005 champion Igor Andreev of Russia 6-3 6-3.
Frenchmen Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils, who are eying last two remaining spots in the World Tour Finals, advanced to the second round.
The fifth-seeded Simon defeated Igor Kunitsyn of Russia 6-3 6-2 and sixth seed Monfils dismissed Spanish Marcel Granollers 6-4 6-2.
Also, in a re-match of the 2008 all-Spanish final, defending champion David Ferrer battled past two-time former winner Nicolas Almagro 7-5 6-7(3) 6-2.
In other matches of the day, Spaniard Tommy Robredo edged past Belgian qualifier Christophe Rochus 6-0 5-7 6-3, Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay rallied past 2003 champion Juan Carlos Ferrero 2-6 7-6 (4) 6-3 and Argentine Juan Monaco knocked out countryman Martin Vassallo Arguello 6-3 6-2.
