Murray opened the match on a bad note and lost his serve in the very first game to give Latvian Ernests Gulbis a quick lead. Gulbis extended his lead to 4-2 with another solid break and continued to threaten the Scot with his massive groundstrokes. The set eventually came to a close with a 6-4 scoreline in Latvian's favour.
The second set saw a much needed shift in momentum when Murray broke Gulbis' serve in the sixth game to finally level the match at one set a piece. The decider brought the best out of both players as in the absence of any further breaks of serve, the match went into a decisive tie-break which Murray dominated with his improved play and completed the 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) win in
two hours and 33 minutes of play.
Murray will now meet American wild card and in-form Mardy Fish, who took out Frenchman Richard Gasquet 7-5, 6-2 in a mere 69 minutes of play.
Next up is Spaniard and World No.1 Rafael Nadal, who takes on another Frenchman Julien Benneteau for a place in the last eight.
