Top seeded Scot Andy Murray cruised through his quarterfinal match against local favourite Albert Montanes to reach the finals of the 2009 Open Tenis Valencia, being played here in Valencia, Spain.
Murray started the match well and pocketed an elusive break in the ninth game to wrap up the opening set 6-4. As the match progressed, the Scot consolidated his lead with one break after another and posted the 6-4, 6-2 win in just 73 minutes of play.
In another quarterfinal match, Shanghai Masters Champion and second seed Nikolay Davydenko stayed on course for the fifth title of the year with a hard fought win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in a match that had a seemingly easy scoreline.
The Russian broke opponent Guillermo Garcia-Lopez's serve early on in the set and pocketed the opener 6-4. The second set saw two trades of serves when the local star bounced back momentarily to level the set and push it into the deciding tie-break which again saw Davydenko rise to the occasion and build a formidable lead which ended with a 6-4, 7-6(3) win in almost two hours of play.
In the day's most surprising result, Kremlin cup winner Mikhail Youzhny beat fifth seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon in straight sets to reach the last four of the event. Youzhny, who has been in tremendous form since his win on home soil, looked sharp and focussed throughout the match and pocketed elusive breaks in each set to close the 6-4, 6-4 win in one hour and 36 minutes.
In the day's last match, which showcased the battle of Spaniards, fourth seed Fernando Verdasco beat Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-2 to complete the semifinal line-up which now has a Scot, two Russians and a Spaniard, all vying for the top honours.
