Carlos Moya earned a hard-fought victory over Tim Smyczek on Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open. Smyczek showed no sign of nervousness against former World No. 1 Carlos Moya, but finally the experience prevailed, as Moya finished up as a winner with 7-6(7) 7-6(5) scoreline in a match that lasted for two hours and 20 minutes.
Moya missed last year's tournament due to injury, looked satisfied over the win, as he quoted in an on-court interview, following the match: “I was nervous when I was closing the match, but I’m hitting well. I’m happy to be here with you.” So far, Moya has won 20 ATP World Tour titles, but he could only manage to win one match this season.
On the other hand, Frenchmen Jeremy Chardy and Florent Serra won their respective matches in straight-sets in Indian Wells. Serra wrapped up the match in 53 minutes by defeating Colombian Alejandro Falla 6-1 6-2. Chardy was winning with 6-1 6-4 scoreline, when his opponent Italian Potito Starace retired with a back injury.
In other matches, Italian Fabio Fognini earned a hard-fought victory over Belgian Olivier Rochus 6-4 1-6 7-5; whereas, Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez defeated Slovakian Lukas Lacko with a 4-6 6-4 7-5 scoreline in two hours and 24 minutes. This was his first match win of 2010. German Rainer Schuettler defeated Brazilian Thiago Alves 7-5 6-0.
