Second seeded Spaniard Albert Montanes registered a hard fought 6-2, 7-6(2) win over German Simon Gruel to reach the second round o the 2010 Brasil Open, being played here in Costa Don Sauipe, Brazil.
Montanes made a strong start to the match and won the opening set 6-2. However, things changed in the second set and Greul started building more pressure on the Spaniard. Although, once the set went into the tie-break, it was all Montanes who spared only two points to fetch the straight sets win.
In another exciting match from the opening day, Spaniard Daniel-Gimeno-Traver got the better of compatriot Santiago Ventura 7-6(7), 6-1 to book his place in the next round.
Brazilian Wild Card Ricardo Mello created quite a stir on the opening day when he beat a much higher ranked opponent, Italian Paolo Lorenzi 6-2, 7-5 to reach the second round.
