Two time former champion and seventh seeded Albert Montanes defeated Australian Matthew Ebden 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of Estoril Open on Tuesday. 

Montanes converted 4 out of 13 break point to register a straight set victory and will next face either American Bobby Reynolds or Attila Balazs of Hungary.

Eighth-seeded Italian Flavio Cipolla downed Diego Junquiera of Argentina 6-4, 6-4 to set up next round clash with Daniel Munoz-De La Nava, who ousted Javier Marti 7-5, 6-3.

Bjorn Phau of Germany edged past 2010 runner-up Frederico Gil 6-4, 6-2 and next faces fourth seeded Albert Ramos of Spain.

Rui Machado of Portugal prevailed 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-2 against wild card Pedro Sousa and will next square against top seeded and defending champion Juan Martin del Potro.
