Rising French star Gael Monfils scored his first ever Davis Cup win here in Palais des Sports, Toulon, France with a straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 7-6(5) victory over German No.1 Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Monfils opened the match well and broke Kohlschreiber twice to pocket the opener 6-1. The second set saw a slight shift in momentum when the German raced to a 3-0 lead only to be broken back and lose the set 6-4. The decider turned out to be the most competitive set of the opening rubber where Monfils struggled to close despite a 4-2 lead.
As the set went into the tie-break, things returned to normal for Monfils, who thwacked some of the most impressive passing shot winners to complete the three set win in almost two and a half hours of play.
In the day's second rubber, French No.1 Jo-Wilfried tsonga takes on German Benjamin Becker.
