French star Gael Monfils registered another three set victory, this time over Spaniard Daniel Gimeno Traver to enter the final of the 2010 Mercedes Cup, being played in Stuttgart, Germany.
Monfils made a good start to the match and took the opening set by 6 games to 4. Gimeno-Traver however bounced back and secured a crucial break to level the match at one set a piece. The third set turned out to be a lop-sided affair when Monfils regained momentum to post a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 victory.
“It was tough,” Monfils said. “We were waiting for maybe three-four hours so it was tough to perform. Daniel was playing with a lot of spin and when he played it back behind me it was tough to adjust my step, but I tried to make him play a lot of backhands. The third set was quicker, but I think he was struggling a bit physically."
Monfils now meets another Spaniard Albert Montanes, who took out former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 7-6(6) to register his first ever win in as many as six career meetings.
"I’m very happy to win today and to reach the final tomorrow," said Montanes. "It is special to beat Ferrero. I’d played him five times and always lost, but today I won and it’s very special for me."
