Frenchman Gael Monfils demolished Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello 6-4 6-2 at the Proton Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur 2009 to enter the quarter finals and set up a date with top seed Russian Nikolay Davydenko.
Monfils wrapped up the match in just over an hour and a half for a quarter final appearance. He leads 2-1 in career meetings against his Russian opponent in the quarters.
Tomas Berdych, the sixth seed, survived a scare against German Simon Greul to win 6-3 4-6 6-3 in two hours and 7 minutes and book a berth in the quarters. Robin Soderling, the French Open runner up, awaits the Czech in the quarters with a 3-2 lead in their career meetings.
World No. 12 Fernando Gonzalez had a similar fate as Berdych in his battle against Indian qualifier Rohan Bopanna but managed to pull a 6-4 3-6 6-4 win in 83 minutes.
"I was expecting a tough match," Gonzalez said. "He really served well tonight and I was hardly able to play in his service games. Once the point started I felt I had the advantage. It was good to get the win and advance to the quarter-finals."
Wildcard Joachim Johansson, who had a fairytale outing at the tournament after his long awaited return, was sent packing by Richard Gasquet who came from a set down in the first two win 4-6 7-6(1) 6-2 in almost 2 hours. Johansson and Gasquet fired 24 and 26 aces respectively.
He next will face second seed Fernando Verdasco, who fended off seven of nine break point opportunities in a 6-4 6-0 win over Slovak Karol Beck.
