Qualifier Mona Barthel of Germany capped a perfect week of tennis on Saturday by claiming her maiden WTA title on Saturday. The German won the 2012 Moorila Hobart International WTA tournament by beating top-seeded Yanina Wickmayer in straight sets with a 6-1, 6-2 scoreline in the title match.
With this victory Barthel won her eighth consecutive match at the Hobart International. The 21-year-old German, who is currently ranked as 64th in WTA Rankings, finished the match with an ace and also mustered 82 percent on her first-serve in this title match.
Barthel beat second-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues, No. 4 seed Angelique Kerber and Australian fifth seeded and defending champion Jarmila Gajdosova to her en-route to the final. The jubilant German quoted after the match, "I have to relax now a little bit and of course I will celebrate. But I have to think about the next match. I play again on Monday at the Aussie Open, so I have to go today and try to get the flight to Melbourne so it's a little bit stressful right now. I will try to go to the Melbourne Park centre and have a look around.” She further added that “I've never been there before so I will look everywhere and see and then I will try to have a hit ... try to get used to the courts."
