Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner won their first Grand Slam doubles title on Saturday, when they defeated Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau with a 6-1 7-5 7-5 scoreline in the final of the Championships at Wimbledon. With this win, Austrian Melzer and German Petzschner have become the first players to clinch victories in their maiden major doubles since Luis Horna and Pablo Cuevas won the2008 French Open.
After the match, Melzer said, “I think we're just two good tennis players, two good singles players, who proved in the past that we could play doubles.” He further added that “it was just a matter of how good we get together. We played great from the first round. Had one tough one in the semis. But still I think we really played good, good doubles the two weeks.”
The unseeded pair of Melzer and Petzschner had been in top form throughout the Championships tournament, as they easily got one-set lead in the final by breaking in the first game of the match. Lindstedt and Tecau saved two set points on serve in the 10th game of the second set, but Melzer and Petzschner broke serve to love in the 12th game and got the decisive lead.
As Petzchner quoted, “I think we had a really good start in the match,” He further added “we played incredible tennis the first set. I think also the second set we were the much better team. I think we just played one of our best matches out there today. I think we deserved to win.”
