World No.3 Russian Maria Sharapova takes on countrywoman Maria Kirilenko in the semi-final clash at the 2012 London Olympics on Friday.
Sharapova, comes into this match with a 42-6 in-loss record and 3 titles in her bag, including the French Open. She has displayed tremendous will power and the hunger to win matches and this has helped reach amongst the best, something she truly deserves. She reached the quarter-finals after winning the first two rounds easily and then slogging it out against German Sabine Lisicki in a three set marathon. Her overall game has really improved and her ability to mix play has helped her win some really crucial matches.
She next faces - Maria Kirilenko, who stunned sixth seeded Petra Kvitova 7-6(3), 6-3 in the earlier round. She comes in as the underdog, but if taken lightly Kirilenko is the kind of player who will hurt you. Her win-loss record stands at 21-14 this year. Kirilenko is yet to win a title this year.
Both the players have met five time before and Sharapova has a slender lead with 3-2 in her favour. Last time they met at Indian Wells this year, where Sharapova won with 3-6 7-5 6-2 scoreline.
