Having compared her movement to “a cow on ice”, Russian Maria Sharapova comes into the Stuttgart Open as the defending champion, having defeated Victoria Azarenka in straight sets in last year’s final. Her victory at Roland Garros last year helped her achieve a career Grand Slam, which goes back to 2004 where she won her first Grand Slam at Wimbledon.
Sharapova stated that it was her victory in Stuttgart that helped her lift the biggest tournament on clay last year. “Looking back, I think it was a really important win for me,” commented Sharapova. “It ultimately led to my win at the French Open. For me, to get a win on clay at one of the toughest tournaments of the year, gave me huge confidence.”
Sharapova said that she is positive about her comeback to this event, “It is always great coming back to a city and tournament where you have had success,” Sharapova stated. “You have those special memories when you step back on the court where you were holding the trophy. And, of course, there is always room for another Porsche," she added in reference to the sports car which accompanies the winner's cheque.
The Stuttgart event features eight out of the Top-10 players in the World and this tournament promises to be an exciting one with some enthralling clashes throughout the week.
