Makarova upsets Ivanovic in marathon, Clijsters sails through
Russian Ekaterina Makarova registered the biggest (and longest) win of her career when she completed a scintillating comeback to defeat Serbia's Ana Ivanovic in a marathon encounter.

Russian Ekaterina Makarova put together the finest serves and fiercest strokes of her career to battle past former world number one Ana Ivanovic in a three set marathon to enter the second round of the 2011 Australian Open, the Grand Slam of Asia Pacific, being played here in Melbourne, Australia.

Makarova made a bad start to the match and lost her serve in the fourth game and with it, the set 6-3. The second set opened on a different note when Makarova got an early break, just to be broken back. Another trade of breaks followed after which the Russian pocketed a final one in the tenth game to level the match at one set a piece.

The decider saw Ivanovic race to a quick 3-1 lead which Makarova blew piece-by-piece after reeling off three games in a row. As the match progressed both players held their nerves and serves until Ivanovic faltered in the eighteenth game to give away the 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 match in two hours and 47 minutes of play.

In an absoluting contrasting match up, third seed and 2004 finalist Kim Clijsters took out Russian Dinara Safina in just 44 minutes of play with a perfect execution of tennis, winning 6-0, 6-0.

Other notable winners of the day are No.7 Jelena Jankovic, No.5 Samantha Stosur, Flavia Pennetta, Shahar Peer, Petra Martic, Ayumi Morita, Nadia Petrova, Sorana Cirstea, Alisa Kleybanova, Lucie Safarova and Maria Kirilenko, who reached the quarterfinals last year.
