Li beats Sharapova in her opening Istanbul encounter
World No. 5 Na Li of China made a terrific comeback from 0-4 down in the first set tie-breaker and maintained the momentum in the second-set to beat World No. 2 Maria Sharapova of Russia with a 7-6 (4) 6-4 scoreline in her debut match of the 2011 WTA Championships.

French Open champ Na Li of China once again proved why she is such an unpredictable contender on tour. The Chinese tennis sensation played fantastically to make a terrific comeback from 0-4 down in the first set tie-breaker and maintained the momentum in the second-set to beat World No. 2 Maria Sharapova of Russia with a 7-6 (4) 6-4 scoreline in her debut match of the 2011 WTA Championships. With this defeat, Sharapova has lost her two round-robin matches in this tournament and she is lingering at the bottom of the White-Group.

It was a very competitive duel, where Sharapova found herself struggling with shot-selection after she lost the first set. Li kept coming back with her steady play and managed to keep her nerves calm under tremendous pressure. Li smashed an ace, got 68% first serves in and clobbered 15 winners to win the match 7-6(4), 6-4.

After 1 hour and 7 minutes of stiff battle, Li claimed the see-saw first set in an interesting tie-breaker. Both the contenders had their opportunities, but Li fared well under pressure and finally clinched it. The Chinese tennis sensation earned 66% points on her first serve, got benefited from Sharapova’s 20 unforced errors. Both the players exchanged breaks early on in the second-set before Li got the decisive one in the seventh game and sailed through.

Did not see it coming before the tournament, but after her loss to Stosur, it wasn't that suprising. Still, I hope it gives Li some confidence.
