Kirilenko played well, but only in patches and she could not come up with something different or dazzling to halt the progress of stoic Kuznetsova, who did not allow her to get any sort of freebies during the crunch moments of the match.
In other matches: former world number one Maria Sharapova today gave a clear indication about her stakes at this year's title as she registered a double bagel win over American Beatrice Capra with a 6-0 6-0 scoreline to enter the pre-quarterfinals of the 2010 US Open.
Sharapova now meets top seed and tour leader Caroline Wozniacki, who registered a similar win over her Chinese Taipei's opponent, Yung-Jan Chan. Wozniacki won the 6-1, 6-0 match in just 73 minutes of play.
In a major upset from the day, fourth seed and 2008 finalist Jelena Jankovic bowed out of the event with a 2-6, 6-7(1) loss handed by Wimbledon quarterfinalist Kaia Kanepi. German Andrea Petkovic had the easiest entry into the Round of 16 when her opponent Chinese Shuai Peng gave her a walkover.
